Feast on the Beach celebrates its fifth anniversary under the stars at Lava Lava Beach Club at Anaehoomalu Bay at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
This popular holiday event features delicious food stations created in conjunction with Paradise Gourmet Catering, along with beer, wine, libations and its signature toes-in-the-sand ambiance.
Recent Grammy museum inductee Henry Kapono will perform SONGS OF C&K, a tribute to the music of Cecilio and Kapono. Joining Henry on stage is Hawaii Music Award winner, Johnny Valentine, Alx Kawakami (of Manoa DNA) and 2016 “Most Promising Artist” Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner, Blayne Asing. Also performing is LT Smooth, who’s velvety sound will keep the party going.
In recognition of the event’s fifth year of supporting local nonprofits, a portion of ticket proceeds will benefit Kona Community Hospital Foundation, Hospice of Kona, North Hawaii Hospice, Lava Kids and Hawaii Island Humane Society.
Advance purchase of Feast on the Beach tickets will be required. Tickets, priced at $100 per person or $1,500 for a reserved table of 10 are available from the participating nonprofit partners.

Kona Choral Society announces holiday concerts
The Kona Choral Society presents its Primary, Children’s and Youth choruses in “A Celebration of the Holiday Season,” a free concert, at 5:30 p.m. on Friday at Hale Halawai.
The choruses are led by Youth Director Wendy Buzby.
At 4 p.m. Dec. 16, the Kona Choral Society presents its annual free Joy to the World Concert at the Old Kona Airport Park’s Makaeo Events Pavilion.

GPS hosts holiday event
GPS, aka Good Pots Studio, a group of hobby artists, jewelers and potters host their annual holiday sale Friday and Saturday at the gallery located 1/2 mile north of Holualoa Village.
Come enjoy local art, ceramics and jewelry in the upslope Holualoa community. The sale will include live music, wine and pupu on Friday evening. On Saturday, attendees can enjoy Kona coffee, live music and freshly baked pastries.
Featured artists are Suzanne Merner, Gerald Ben, Claire Seastone, Suzanne Wang, Nora Yamanoha, Lou Lambert, Kristi Yamanaka, Renee Fukumoto-Ben and Thomas Algreen.

Waimea Community Chorus presents 24th annual holiday concert
Sing out the holiday cheer with the Waimea Community Chorus as it celebrates its 24th annual holiday concert “Holiday Favorites!” this weekend in Waimea.
The concert will be presented twice, first at 7 p.m. on Saturday with a matinée at 3 p.m. on Sunday at Kahilu Theatre in Waimea. This year, there are more than 70 community members ages 16-86 participating in the choir. A 16-piece orchestra comprised of local musicians will accompany them.
Barbara Kopra, choir musical director since 2005, came up with this year’s theme after she had asked the members of the choir to provide a list of their favorite holiday songs to sing.
“From there, I found the musical arrangements that would benefit both the choir and the orchestra. I love featuring choir pieces with orchestral accompaniment for Christmas time,” she said.
From first-time performers to seasoned vocalists, the Waimea Community Chorus will be performing selections both classical and popular, from “The First Noel” with Pachelbel’s “Canon” to sing-a-long medleys and highlighted holiday pop songs throughout the decades.

Mahukona Music Under the Stars Saturday
Mahukona Music Under the Stars is Saturday at Mahukona Beach Park in North Kohala.
The event runs 5-10 p.m. and will feature music by Bottle of Blue, Uma Zuma Duo and 2 for the SHOW. Entry is free with donation of a new, unwrapped toy for Toys for Tots or a bag of food for The Food Basket, Hawaii Island’s food bank.
There will also be food by Cool Runnings food truck and Real Fresh Cookin’ available for purchase.

Lanihau Center hosts holiday event
Santa and friends are coming to Lanihau Center on Saturday.
From 10 a.m.-4 p.m., the shopping center in Kailua-Kona hosts the free event featuring a holiday craft fair, prizes and giveaways, photos with Santa and friends and holiday entertainment, including a hula performance by Lori Lei Studio, performance by Bo Waite and balloon creations by balloon sculptor Duane. The KWXX Treasure Chest Giveaway will also take place Saturday.

Kailua Village hosts holiday festivities
Holiday festivities continue in Kailua Village with a concert, stroll, marketplace and lighted boat parade on Sunday.
From 1-6 p.m. Sunday is Kokua Kailua and Village Marketplace featuring area merchants, artists and musicians on Alii Drive, which becomes a pedestrian-only mall during the monthly event. At 4 p.m. is Afternoon at Hulihee celebrating Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop.
The Kailua Village Business Improvement District presents a free holiday concert featuring Hilo’s own Kalani Pe’a, who received a Na Hoku Hanohano Award and Grammy Award for his debut album, “E Walea.” The concert will run 5-6 p.m. Sunday at Center Stage/Emma Square, located across Alii Drive from Hulihee Palace.

Holiday at Hulihee Saturday
The Holiday at Hulihee Christmas Craft Fair is Saturday at Hulihee Palace in Kailua Village.
From 9 a.m.-3 p.m., the event will showcase 15 local artisans and their handiwork and baked goodies. Among the items available will be ornaments, holiday treasures and gifts for the family.

Waikoloa Village plans parade, Keiki Fest
The annual Waikoloa Village Christmas Parade and Keiki Fest will be held Saturday.
The parade will begin at 10 a.m. at the corner of Waikoloa and Paniolo roads and will head to Waikoloa School along Paniolo Road, which will be closed from 10-11 a.m.
Keiki Fest will follow from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the school. The event features free food and games for keiki, and vendors for adults. Keiki who attend may enter a drawing for a bicycle and other prizes.
The Snow King/Queen will be featured in the parade along with several other dignitaries, local businesses and cars. The Snow King/Queen is the winner of the Lions Club essay contest and college scholarship that goes with it.

Concert benefits music education
Bill Noble and Big Island Music Academy will be featured during a Holiday Jazz Brunch Fundraiser Concert from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday at Holualoa Inn.
Enjoy a mimosa or cup of coffee and a delicious brunch while enjoying the view at the Holualoa Inn to the sounds of jazz and holiday music performed by some of Kona’s most talented youth during the event. The fundraiser supports music education in our community.

Library hosts teen holiday craft night
North Kohala Public Library is hosting a special holiday craft and game night just for teens, ages 13-19, at 6 p.m. on Monday in Kapaau.
During the holiday craft event, attendees will make photo luminaries and Christmas ornaments. Photos will be printed on vellum at the library, so attendees need to bring their own photos, or have them saved on a USB flash drive. Those unable to bring a photo can make a Christmas luminary.
There will also be some fun holiday games to play. Light refreshments and hot cocoa will be served during the event, which ends at 8 p.m.

Library hosts Polynesian music, dance program
Te Ea o Te Turama presents a one-hour program of Polynesian music and dance in hopes of achieving cultural awareness of the Maoli of Hawaii, Maohi of Tahiti, Maori of New Zealand, and the Natives of Samoa from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Kailua-Kona Public Library.

Make a Candy House in Honokaa
The Honokaa Public Library invites members of the community to decorate their own candy house from 3:30-5:30 p.m. on Dec. 14.
The Friends of the Libraries Hamakua will provide free edible building materials including graham crackers, colorful candies and frosting so people can drop-in anytime during those two hours, while supplies last.

Halau hosts ‘Christmas Under the Stars’
Halau Ka’eaikahelelani presents “Christmas Under the Stars with Kuana Torres Kahele” Dec. 15 on the Bay View Lawn at Sheraton Kona Resort and Spa at Keauhou Bay.
This performance will include all members of the halau (keiki through adult) and feature five-time Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner Kahele. Kahele, a native of Hilo is a Hawaiian musician, vocalist, songwriter, record producer, dancer and educator.
In addition, there will be a special guest appearance by Lorna Lim. Born and raised in North Kohala, Lim began playing music at an early age with her award-winning family, known simply as the The Lim Family. Both are among Hawaii’s living treasures and are sure to provide an unforgettable experience for all who attend.
After a momentous debut at New York Fashion Week, Manaola is returning home to Hawaii Island to share his culture conscious designs just in time for the holidays. He will also set up his last pop-up shop of 2017, featuring everything from kane aloha shirts to wahine dresses, separates, accessories and more. Kahele will also feature his line of exotic shell jewelry.
Doors open at 5 p.m. for the evening of hula, music and shopping. Also included is a visit and picture with Santa Claus. Tickets are $25 for ages 12 and over, $10 for ages 6-11, and children 5 and under are free.

‘Elf’ to screen Friday
The Kealakekua Public Library will screen the holiday movie “Elf” from 3-4 p.m. on Friday.
Buddy the elf (Will Ferrell) has grown up with Santa, journeys all the way from the North Pole to find his father in New York City. This new Christmas classic is fun for all ages, and is rated PG.
Free popcorn will be served while supplies last. This free program is sponsored by Friends of the Libraries, Kona. Program schedule is subject to change.

Blue Sea Artisans plans monthly workshops
The Blue Sea Artisans Gallery will begin hosting monthly workshops on the second Saturday of each month. The workshops will be held 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the gallery in Keauhou Shopping Center and some will be led by that month’s featured artist, who share their process in creating art.
The Saturday, the gallery offers “Holiday Card Making” with artists Teresea Boswell and Stefanie Culbertson. The workshops are free to the public, however, there will be limited space available to 20 people.
Children, ages 8 and up, and adults are welcome to join in the fun of creating handmade holiday cards. Minor children must be attended by an adult.

Aloha Theatre offers winter break workshops for kids
Aloha Theatre performance skills instructor Emma Zeiler, founder of Montana’s Beartooth Actors Workshop, will offer two three-day theater workshops for ages 8-13.
The first module, offered 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Dec. 27-29 is character development. During the workshop, participants will learn how to bring characters to life by developing a deeper understanding of their roles by putting themselves into their character’s shoes. Memorization is important, but bringing a character to life is what acting is all about.
The second workshop module, offered 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Jan. 3-5. is humorous skits, which will feature very short plays performed with limited props and costumes in an informal setting. Each student will have the opportunity to explore comedic acting through group performance.
The workshops will be conducted at the theater in Kainaliu, and each module will culminate in a free public performance on the final class day. Tuition, which includes all materials necessary, is $75 per module, with a 15 percent discount for students enrolling in both modules.

Grant deadline for art teachers extended
The Hawaii Artist Collaboration has extended the application period for the 2017 Art Teachers Grant to Dec. 14.
This annual grant was established in 2015 to provide art making materials to Big Island public school art teachers. Up to 40 collaboration artists from around the world gather in Holualoa each year to create unique artworks which are then auctioned off to collectors at a gala event at the Holualoa Inn. These career artists believe that making art is an important part of education and encourages creative approaches to many learning situations.
Proceeds from event tickets, artist donations and generous additional support from Akamai Art Supply are available to art teachers needing help with supplies.

KVA names featured artist for December
The Kailua Village Artists featured artist for the month of December is watercolor, porcelain and silk painter Betty Gerstner.
Gerstner has been a porcelain artist for more than 35 years. In 2000, shortly after moving to Hawaii, she began studying watercolor with some of the better known watercolor masters on the Big Island. In 2016, she renewed her interest in silk painting, and now divides her time between the mediums.
The beautiful scenery, tropical atmosphere and wonderful people of Hawaii are an inspiration to Gerstner’s artistic talents. Her diverse subjects range from tropical birds, fish and honu (turtle) to the colorful flowers and points of interest of Hawaii. She also paints pet portraits by commission.
Gerstner’s art studio is at her home in Captain Cook, where she teaches classes in porcelain painting.

Kona Brewers Festival tickets go on sale Dec. 16
The 2018 Kona Brewers Festival has been set for March 10, organizers recently announced.
General admission tickets are $85 for the 3-7 p.m. event on the luau grounds of King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel. Ticket sales benefit various organizations focused on environment, education, culture and youth. Admission includes: commemorative glass mug, 10 brew tasting coupons, unlimited sampling of gourmet cuisine and an afternoon of entertainment by musician and the annual Trash Fashion Show.
After testing a shorter two-session format for the past two years, the Kona Brewers Festival will join all ticket holders together into one extended session. New this year will be a special ticket ($185) that allows early admission to the main event as well as access to Honu’s Tap Room and Lounge.
